Here is an imaginary cross-section of the Freshgate Tunnel passing under the banks of the Charles:

The tunnel lanes you will see in the Tunnel Tour are
shown diagrammatically, with east- and west-bound
lanes situated side-by-side instead of the over-and-under arrangement shown above. The purpose of the
flattened diagrammatic presentation is to make the tunnel concept easier to understand.
An actual tunnel system would take years to design and could take many different forms. The tunnel shown above is only one possible variation, and is based on deep-bore tunnel that recently opened in France. Public Transportation Further, to make the tunnel concept simplified and easier to understand, the presentation you will see only shows a roadway design for private automobile traffic. However, the tunnel should have public transportation within it as well: An alternate tunnel cross-section, which also includes space for subways, appears in the FAQ section of this website, under the question "Shouldn't this proposal also include public transportation ideas along with an automobile tunnel?" If you would like to preview this alternate tunnel cross-section before you take the Tunnel Tour, click HERE. (It shows a larger diameter tunnel with sufficient room for a third level for light rail vehicles.)

The Tunnel Tour presents a seqeunce of maps that show how the Freshgate Tunnel might be routed under the city and connected to various roadways via intersections. You can close the tour at any time to return to the City minus Traffic home page. Again, the tour is optimized for viewing with MS Internet Explorer (version 5 or later) on Windows PCs and Macintosh. (Mozilla uncertain.)
If you are interested in viewing details closely, try the high-resolution version of the Tunnel Tour. This version opens in a window that occupies the entire screen, and will probably only work on PCs with recent versions of Internet Explorer. To view this version, click HERE. |
